Cholesterol is no longer the bad guy!

February is Heart Health Month and we finally see the end of Cholesterol being the bad guy. For over 50 years the Medical Profession and Governments have been telling us that we must cut down our saturated fats and cholesterol if we want to avoid obesity, heart attacks and strokes but in a dramatic turnaround they are now conceding that they were wrong. Heart disease is still a leading cause of death worldwide and obesity is far worse a problem than it was, we now have other major health concerns that have been accelerating like Diabetes, Autism, Dementia, Alzheimers, Autoimmune disease, GERD, Cancer and Chronic Fatigue – could there be a link? Could going low fat for 50 years be a causative factor?

Cholesterol is essential, it is needed by every cell in our bodies. Here are some of the things that it does:-

    • It strengthens and protects the cell membranes -which could be vital in protecting us against diseases like Cancer and Alzheimer’s
    • It is a building block for the manufacturing of Vitamin D in the body – essential for our immune system.
    • It is essential to our neurotransmitters, nervous system and brain.
    • It enables the liver to make Bile Acids that break down fats and help us to absorb the vital fat soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. Bile acids are essential for good digestion and transit time.
    • It is the base for all the steroid hormones; oestrogen, progesterone, testosterone, aldosterone and Cortisol

Our bodies manufacture Cholesterol in the liver, approximately 2,000 mgs a day. If we deprive ourselves of cholesterol in the diet then the liver tries to make more. It also makes more in response to inflammation within the body in an attempt to protect and heal cells. The average daily intake of Cholesterol from food is 200-400 mgs.

So have we been trying to look after our heart at the expense of the rest of our body? YES.

Should we be eating eggs, quality real meat, liver, butter, ghee, duck and goose fat, coconut oil, olive oil? YES.

Should you be concerned if your cholesterol is high? YES because it shows that you have inflammation in your body, not that you had bacon for breakfast.

What should we be doing to cut down our health risks for all these diseases?

    • Do not eat low-fat and fat-free processed food
    • Do not consume bad Cholesterols and other fats that have been changed by processing as in processed meats, margarines, corn oil, trans -fats, hydrogenated fats, rapeseed and sunflower oil that contain inflammatory Omega -6
    • Cut down all sugars: sodas, sweeteners, fruit juice and alcohol
    • cut out all gluten grains and products
    • get your Homocysteine blood levels checked and if it is high it means that your methylation processes are not working well and therefore you may be low on Glutathione which is the body’s strongest antioxidant. If so take a Homocysteine lowering supplement that contains methyl group nutrients – Betaine, choline, methionine, Vitamin B6, B12 and Folic Acid.
    • Help your body deal with detoxification and inflammation by eating healthy foods like Beets and carrots, Tomatoes, spinach, cabbage and Avocados that all contain Glutathione or help the body produce it.
    • Eat non-farmed fish and seafood often
    • Use Celtic Sea salt to help get 80+ good minerals into your diet and not just sodium and notice how much better your food tastes.
    • Get plenty of Magnesium into your body by diet, supplements, Magnesium Spray or Magnesium Bath Flakes.
    • STATINS are not necessary in the majority of cases – discuss with your Doctor and read more about these.

I know it is difficult to comprehend, after all this time, that we no longer need to eat low cholesterol and that we can tuck in to eggs and bacon, good quality steak, chicken, pork, lamb, duck, venison because animal fats do not cause heart disease.  We can eat Avocados, coconut oil, olive oil, butter and ghee.

I made all these changes and:-

    1. I enjoyed my food so much more
    2. was never hungry between meals
    3. became more flexible
    4. had more energy.
    5. I also lost 1 stone in weight from all the right places
    6. no more joint pain.

Food with natural fat in it tastes so much better. The Paleo Diet is the easy way to get recipes and ideas but we don’t actually need to go back to the Paleolithic era we only need to go back to the 1940’s-1950’s diet basics and home cooking with lots of fresh vegetables. We also need to support sustainable farming, biodiversity, and buy more seasonal products and locally produced foods so we support our local economies. Go out and forage in your local neighbourhood instead of relying on the supermarket for everything and try new things, food should be enjoyable not just a necessity.

Good fresh food gives us vitality and health.

Processed, factory food gives us inflammation and a poor quality of life.

    Listen to your body.

GcMaf – A breakthrough in Cancer Treatment

GcMaf is the abbreviation for “Gc-protein-derived macrophage activating factor”. It is found naturally in the body but there is now a way of administering it as a replacement therapy when the body’s defences aren’t doing enough. Macrophages are the white cells that go in like ‘Pac man’ and engulf and digest foreign substances, microbes and cancer cells in a process called phagocytosis.

Interestingly it is completely in line with all the nutritional guidelines that have been developing for the treatment of Autoimmune Diseases that I have been writing about in Millenniumhealth blog. Diseases know to be affected by GcMaf are Cancer, Kidney disease, AIDS, Autism, Thyroid Disease, Diabetes, Multiple Sclerosis, Lyme Disease, Colitis, Crohn’s Disease, Fibromyalgia, Cirrhosis of Liver, wound healing, Osteoporosis, Dementia, Parkinson’s , Rheumatoid Arthritis, and other autoimmune diseases.

The treatment regime is called “The Swiss Protocol” and involves-

    • Total body ultrasound to establish the extent of the disease followed by an individual treatment plan.
    • High protein, low carbohydrate, ant-inflammatory and detoxing diet – so essentially a Paleo-ketogenic diet
    • Amino acid supplements in the case of cancer and Autism
    • Bravo Probiotic Yogurt and suppositories that have over 40 strains of friendly probiotic bacteria  and these produce the enzymes needed to activate GcMaf.
    • GOleic -which is a combination of GcMaf, Oleic Acid a monosaturated (Omega-9) fatty acid and vitamin D. This can be administered in a variety of ways:- injection, drops under the tongue, enemas, suppositories, nebuliser (spray), ointment and mouthwash.
The Company producing GOleic is called Immuno Biotec (Guernsey) and they also sell Bravo Probiotic yogurt.
For more information go to www.gcmaf.eu
More than 60 peer reviewed research papers have been produced by 154 scientists who have trialled
it on a range of different diseases. There are approximately 300 doctors following the protocol and there are some amazing stories of recovery (even from stage 4 cancers) as well as some considerable improvement in patients with Autism. Some people do not respond to the protocol but then they may have already received treatment like chemotherapy and radiation and their detoxifying capability and nutritional status may be compromised. It is relatively early days but all this sounds extremely promising and clinical trials are ongoing.
The two scientists responsible for this discovery were hounded from their home Country and set up a clinic in Switzerland. As with all non-conventional treatments, that cannot be patented by drug companies, they will have many other false claims and bad press along the way but I am sure they will continue their promising work.

    Healing your Digestive Tract

Healing your Digestive Tract and Leaky Gut is the key to your Health

    You can definitely do this!

Terry Wahls MD has Multiple Sclerosis and had been in a wheelchair for 5 years and by changing her diet and nutrition she made an amazing recovery. You can find  information on “The Wahls Protocol” on this 4 min video here. After just a Year she was able to do an 18 mile bike ride. Now I wouldn’t promise that you could do this (as I certainly can’t cycle that far!) but get the right mind set. As she says “The Magic is in the food. If you don’t change your diet and you just take supplements – you are wasting your money“.

What I am suggesting here is going to be the basic guidelines and if you want to know more I will point you in the direction of quality, easy to follow information.

    So let’s get started!

First of all you need to prepare so that you can start in a methodical way and not get overwhelmed by the changes.

Shop for the foods and supplements you need. You will need to eat more vegetables than you are probably used to so buy plenty of these but only as much as you can keep fresh at any one time. These are the things you will choose from to make meals in the first 14+ days and then we will add in some more.

    Shopping list

    • Meat and fish – buy the best quality you can afford and nothing that has been processed. If you can get organic and free range then all the better. If you buy a quality whole chicken then you will be able to get more than one meal out of it and boil the bones up to make a good broth/soup that is beneficial to the immune system. Lambs liver is cheap and nutritious if you like it.
    • Vegetables – broccoli, cauliflower, salads, fresh herbs, all leafy greens, squash, tomatoes, cucumber, fennel, mushrooms, asparagus, bean-sprouts, bell peppers, onions, garlic, avocado.
    • Fruit – all fresh and frozen berries, lemons and limes.
    • Nuts and seeds – all kinds except peanuts as they are technically legumes (starchy vegetables). They can be toasted and sprinkled on salad.
    • Fats and oils – Olive oil cold pressed if possible,  walnut, almond, flax. Coconut oil and coconut butter are especially important as they have the ability to help you get rid of any unwanted yeast levels in the body and are a healthy form of saturated fat that is important in healing.
    • Dairy Substitutes -Almond milk, coconut milk, other nut milks. Coconut or nut milk Kefir,  Eggs.
    • Drinks – filtered water, mineral water, green and herbal teas (peppermint, ginger and fennel teas are especially good to help soothe the digestion.) Miso soup and coconut water. Apparently Yerba mate tea is very good if you are giving up coffee.
    • Kitchen staples – Apple cider vinegar, all spices, herbs, carob, sugar free raw chocolate (it is possible to make this yourself with cacao butter and cacao powder and I will do a post on this as it is brilliant), mustard and Celtic sea salt or Sel de Guerande from France as these salts are full of natural minerals and therefore not white. Sweeteners Stevia or xylitol if required but I prefer to leave sugar out completely for the elimination diet and I don’t like sweeteners.

This is wonderful, real food and you will quickly start to feel better and have more energy than usual.

You may get some ‘odd’ symptoms within the first week. These could include aches and pains where you haven’t previously had them, headache, strange dreams and better dream recall, changes in bowel habit and sleepiness. Most of this can be put down to your body detoxing and should not be severe. Drink more, especially water and this should help. If you have been a coffee addict and you give it up suddenly you may get quite a severe, migraine like headache. I would suggest giving it up by cutting down slowly.

    SUPPLEMENTS.

In the first couple of weeks you should start with

    • L-Glutamine 500mg -1000mgs per day -an amino acid that can help the gut heal
    • Vitamin B complex 50 or Chlorella tablets (start with 2 twice a day and gradually work up to 15 a day)
    • Vitamin D3 1000iu a day
    • Omega 3 fish oils or Krill oil. If you have problems with fish then try Flax seed oil
    • A good Probiotic with over 5 billion live cultures twice a day.
    • Saccharomyces Boulardii probiotic which is actually a tropical yeast culture made from lychee and mangosteen that can kill certain gut infections like Clostridium difficle, E Coli and Salmonella but if you have blood in your stool, as in Crohn’s disease or Ulcerative Colitis do not take this supplement without medical advice. If you have blood in your stool and you don’t know the reason, see your doctor!
    • Magnesium which can be taken by spraying on the skin or preferably have a Sizzling Mineral drink that you sip throughout the day. This is a natural plant based mineral supplement that contains 75 minerals that are bio-available even to a damaged gut. They are available to buy in Europe and the USA and are expanding worldwide.  See video and shop here.

N.B. If you have been ill with cancer or have any other illnesses  or treatment that mean you have a low white blood count or are immuno-compromised you should speak with you Doctor before starting this regime. For children follow the intake recommended on the supplement.

Next step is to get a large shopping bag or box and clear out all your kitchen cupboards and fridge of the things you should not eat while on this detox. Out of sight – out of mind! We hope.

Wheat and other grains, oats, Barley, Rice, Corn and their flours. Even gluten free varieties.

Dairy, milk, butter, cream and ice cream, cheese and yogurt and for the first 3 weeks at least sheep and goat products as well.

Sugar and all sweeteners except the ones on your shopping list

    Alcohol

    caffeine

    Potatoes or sweet potatoes

    soy and soya products

all other fruit and fruit juices

Finally gather more information and recipes and make a menu plan for a few days. If you want a cookbook Clean Eats by Alejandro Junger MD is full of great ideas and you can also find lots on the internet – try searching for wheat and dairy free or Paleo but check ingredients list against what is allowed at least in the first 2-3 weeks. if you have Autoimmune disease there are even recipes for Paleo autoimmune protocol which leaves out the nightshade vegetables. If you sign up to Pinterest you can save your favourite recipes and ideas easily. There are loads of websites and Blogs where you can get free information and recipes.

Breakfast can be the one meal that people have the most trouble with but try to have some protein like eggs(with spinach maybe). Home-made smoothies can be a very nutritious start to the day, especially if you are in a hurry or not used to eating breakfast add a spoon of almond butter or a handful of nuts and seeds to add protein and stop you from feeling hungry by mid morning.

You should not be hungry on this diet. It will stabilise your blood sugar. Have a few nuts and seeds (like sunflower or pumpkin) with you for if you get hungry or are late with a meal. Your lunch and dinner should be mainly vegetables or salad with maybe olive oil and lemon juice as a dressing and a medium portion of protein. If you want to stir fry it is best to use coconut oil as this stays stable at higher temperatures.

I found that because of putting more thought into meals and food combinations I started to enjoy my meals more. Try not to concentrate on what you are not able to eat and remember that as your health starts to improve you will feel better than any “treat” made you feel!

    Autoimmune disease epidemic

    The Truth About Cancer

We are in the midst of an Autoimmune disease epidemic. Multiple Sclerosis, Type 1 Diabetes, Dementia, Alzheimer’s, Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Thyroid disease, Lupus, Gout, Autism, ADHD, some forms of cancer and hundreds of others either confirmed as Autoimmune or highly suspected to be. The numbers of people affected now exceeds the number of people with both heart disease and Cancer combined, which is more than 50 million in the USA alone! If you are worried about your health and want to start helping yourself or your family right now then start discovering proven ways you can change your diet, feel better and end the pain and life limiting effects of chronic disease.

It was because my Mother had Rheumatoid arthritis that I became interested in and started studying Nutrition, about 35 years ago. We always felt that there was a strong relationship with the food she ate and the progression of her disease but try as I might I was unable to get her to change her diet. I felt that milk and wheat were the possible foods causing her trouble but she would not give up milk because she felt she needed it for her bones and nothing would change her mind – she would drink at least a pint a day. She did try to go wheat free but only lasted 3 days and said that she felt ill, weak, had a constant headache and low mood – all things I now know to be withdrawal symptoms from the narcotic effects of wheat itself. The progression of her disease was relentless and in addition to the painful and disabling joint changes she developed Sjogren’s Syndrome(an auto-immune condition where the body’s immune system attacks glands that secrete fluid, such as the tears and salivary glands), heart failure and adrenal failure.

Over the last few years my focus has been more on the cancer epidemic but then my son became ill and it took me a while but eventually we managed to come up with a diagnosis of Reiter’s Syndrome – another autoimmune disease that causes a reactive arthritis plus other symptoms of inflammation. As with my mother, Autoimmunity often involves more than one reaction in the body and he also has Celiac, Eczema, Sjogren’s syndrome(dry eyes) and Lichen Planus a non infectious skin condition.

So I have come full circle and am back investigating autoimmune diseases again and everything else that now appears to be connected to inflammation that starts in the gut.

Over the last few years an amazing amount of progress has been made in this field – almost all of it in America. The Americans have had Naturopathic Doctors or Medical Doctors who have taken up Functional Medicine, where Doctors look for the cause and don’t just treat the symptoms and so it has been possible for those with a more Holistic view of health to discover the total body connections more easily than those who have a more ‘body systems’ approach and an early entry into specialisation.

I have recently completed The Detox Summit on-line and have learnt so much. My son had been dairy free for awhile but was still not as well as we would like and following the Summit we both went on a months detox diet.

The results were quick and dramatic.

Within the month my son lost 3lbs, had more energy, no painful joints, no more stomach pains or bowel problems and his eczema cleared up completely.

I lost 5lbs, became free of aches and pains, more flexible and could touch my toes or the floor with ease,  no more pains in back or ankles or swelling of hands and ankles, sinus problems and mucous in throat at night disappeared, anxiety and palpitations ended, stomach bloating and pains vanished and bowel movements became normal.

There was also an effect of mental clarity and better dream recall that I think we both felt. We then continued with a natural, fresh diet leaving out processed foods and gradually reintroduced some foods and watched for reactions. We took supplements to help heal the gut and to rebuild a good Microbiome of beneficial bacteria in the gut. More Posts will follow to help you do the same.

The Thymus gland and the Immune System

The Thymus gland is situated under the breastbone at the top of the chest, just below the Thyroid Gland. It is the major gland of our immune system, responsible for many functions, including the production of T Lymphocytes – a type of white blood cell responsible for cell mediated immunity rather than antibody controlled immunity. Cell mediated immunity is extremely important in forming resistance to infection by mold-like bacteria, yeasts, fungi, parasites and viruses (including Epstein -Barr and Herpes Simplex). It is also critical in protecting us from the development of cancer and allergies.

The Thymus gland also releases several hormones which regulate many immune functions and low levels of these are associated with depressed immunity and increased susceptibility to infection. Thymic hormones are frequently very low in the elderly, AIDS patients and cancer patients ( especially those who have undergone Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy) and high stress levels deplete them more.

There are three main areas where you can do things to improve your Thymus function and boost your immunity.

    1. Prevent  Thymus damage and involution (shrinkage). The Thymus is extremely susceptible to free radical and oxidative damage caused by radiation, infection, stress, exposure to high levels of pollution or chemotherapy drugs and chronic illness. Anti-oxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, glutathione, zinc and beta-carotene, anti-oxidant herbs like Astragalus and certain mushroom extracts can all help to prevent Thymus damage and enhance cell mediated immunity.
    2. There are many nutrients that are important in the production, secretion and function of thymic hormones. Deficiencies of any one of these nutrients can result in decreased thymic hormone function and impaired immune function. Zinc is particularly effective in restoring depressed immunity and low levels of zinc usually cause a lack of sense of smell and taste. Vitamin B6 and vitamin C are also critical nutrients and because they are water soluble and not stored in the body it is vital to maintain a sufficient daily intake.
    3. Stimulation of Thymus gland activity can be by high quality thymus extracts, either by capsule supplements or by a series of injections depending on condition of the immune system. I have seen someone who had a depressed white blood cell count of 2,500-3000 for 2 years following Radiotherapy and chemotherapy (the normal range is 4,000-10,000) rise to 5,300 after one course of Thymus injections and rising to 9,400 three months later. For more information click Thymus-Therapy The immune enhancing effects of thymus extract have been can be useful in treating the following conditions:
    • Lowered resistance or susceptiblity to infection.
    • Degenerative conditions of the spine and joints, including Rheumatoid arthritis.
    • Autoimmune diseases – RA, ulcerative colitis, Chrohn’s disease etc.
    • Metabolic disturbances such as Diabetes and gout.
    • Diseases of the heart and circulation.
    • Chronic inflammatory diseases of the respiratory tract, the liver, the gallbladder, the kidneys or the prostate gland.
    • Thymus peptides can also be used as a supplementary measure in the treatment of cancer (pre- and post- operative treatment and for reduction of side effects during and after Radiation and chemotherapy)
    • Also as a prophylatic measure against precancerous conditions in people who have a hereditary predispoition to cancer.

Other herbs which positively effect the thymus gland include liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) and European mistletoe (Viscum Album). The most well known, often taken to prevent colds, is Echinacea angustiflolia but this should be taken with care by people who have an autoimmune disease.

If you wish to supplement with Thymus Enzyme Capsules (dirived from calf thymus) then a quality product is very important and there are many on the market. I have used products from a company called Enzymatic Therapy and they have 2 products – Thymulus and Thymuplex.

    The True Magic of Mushrooms

    Mushrooms

For centuries we have known that certain mushrooms have a beneficial effect on health but only more recently have the active compounds contained within them been isolated and studied.

Our immune systems are extremely complex and in order to protect us from bacteria and viruses and also genetic mistakes during cellular reproduction that result in cancer growth, these complex systems need to be in balance.

Nature has provided us with many plants and herbs that enhance overall immunity. Immune -potentiating botanicals are also used to increase the effectiveness of drugs and reduce side effects. The Chinese call this Fu Zheng therapy, which means to support the body’s natural balance. Zheng (also called Zheng Qi) is translated as meaning life energy, activity and resistance and when it is deficient a favourable environment for cancer is created. In Western terms the immune systems surveillance function fails to discover and suppress the growth of cancerous or mutated cells. The flow of “Qi” (sometimes spelled Chi) may be disrupted by poor nutrition, lifestyle, overwork, stress repressed or excessive emotions and lack of exercise. This Zheng qi, or Qi, is also damaged by the core medical treatments for cancer, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and in China and Japan Fu Zheng therapy has been used alongside these therapies with significantly improved outcomes.

If you have an immune compromised condition (eg. cancer, AIDS, leukemia or chronic infections such as Epstein-barr virus) then learn how to boost your immune system using mushrooms, plants, acupuncture, Qi Gong and with a good diet, supplements and lifestyle.

The technical advance is that we now know that many of the botanicals used in Fu Zheng therapy contain polysaccharides beta-1,6 glucan and beta-1,3 glucan. Beta-glucans are known as “biological response modifiers” and they specifically stimulate the innate branch of the immune system. Research has shown that beta-glucans stimulate macrophage, NK (Natural killer) cells, T cells and the production of immune system cytokines. They may also enhance Dendritic Cell function. Recent research has shown that frequently immune suppression means that these cells may be produced but may not mature and therefore not function as they should.

Obviously not everyone has access to an Integrated Oncologist or a Chinese Medicine Practitioner but there are products on the market like ” Immiflex” and “Biobran” (made from rice) and there are mushroom extracts, Astragalus, and other botanicals that can be taken alongside conventional therapy to minimise the damage and the side effects. Some mushrooms have specific action against certain cancers or conditions – for instance Turkey tail and Agaricus have been shown to kill sarcoma in laboratory conditions when few chemotherapy drugs have any effect. For a chart detailing specific actions of each kind of mushroom please see the link to Paul Stamets website, below. Shiitake, Maitake, Reishi and Oyster mushrooms are some of the more well-known varieties with very well documented research.

So, if you have a compromised immune system, try some Eastern therapies to improve your immune function, your Qi and your wellbeing and you will be amazed by how effective they can be.
